It's been a slow start to the new year here in Indiana. We started a home project that took more time than planned so we are finally finished and back in full gear , working on new pieces for sale at shows and on the website. It is a new year and we are reflecting on 2011 and planning for 2012. I haven't posted for a while and still haven't gotten photos taken to upload to our website and blog. We have some new pieces, a grained side board, small geometric washstand, and more. Dan is working on a really large architectural mirror and blanket chest with elaborate decoration. I will post photos as I get a chance. I guess I need to make a resolution to update more often. Our first scheduled show will be the Designer Craftsman show of Philadelphia. This year the dates change from February to March 9, 10, and 11. We have snow, but didn't get buried like the Northeast did. We are back into our work routine and planning and working on what we will bring to our shows this year. Dan did this wonderful decorated blanket chest for a customer. He liked it so much that he was inspired to do a decorated two piece cupboard in a similar Pennsylvania German type painting. Its been a hectic October! We were in Waterford, VA the first of the month and in Marlborough, MA the end of the month. This November we are coming to Wilton, CT. November 13th and 14th we will be at the New England Historical Connection, a very well respected shop carrying classic American reproduction furniture and accessories..300 Danbury Road (Rte 7) This is our second year at this show. I can't believe that October is right around the corner! We are heading to Waterford VA next week to participate in the Waterford Home Tours and Crafts Exhibit. The show runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 1,2,3. This is the sixty seventh year for this show. Quite remarkable. Craft demonstrations, Civil War and Revolutionary War era reenactors, music, and wonderful historic architecture, there is something to interest everyone.

Childs Chairs

Four years ago I painted a chair for our grandaughter Ella. With a bunny, butterfly and bee and her name, its her special chair when she visits our house. I just finished a scecond chair for our second granddaughter Ava who will turn two in November. Several friends suggested that there might be others who would like a ,"one of a kind", personalized chair for their child or grandchild. I am showing three chairs that show what might be ordered. Also photos of Dan's grain painted and decorated childs chair for someone that would like a more traditional version .

The chair size is 24"H x 14"W at the widest point on the back, and seat wideth of 12" The cost would be aprox $350.00.

We are back from our Nantucket trip. The show was good and we appreciate all that attended and made purchases . We had a good time and got to see some fellow exhibitors that we haven't seen for a while. That was fun. I took pictures of the show and for the first time ever thought that they were downloaded to my computer but somehow managed to delete them! I can't believe it. So no additional pictures to share. Nantucket Folk Art Show

Well we are here on Nantucket. We set up the show today. The tent is huge and a very nice space. The show preview is this evening at 6PM so everyone is working to put up the booths lighting and place our artwork in just the right place. Here are some pictures of the the tent and set up. It is amazing how this large open space becomes this wonderful show place with all this wonderful work. I will try and post some more pictures of the show tomorrow.

Nantucket Folk Art and Artisan Show July 15-17th at Bartlett's Farm

We are finishing up our projects for the Nantucket Show July 15th, 16, and 17th. It will be great to see all the artists and craftsmen participating and get to visit with the great people from Small Friends on Nantucket Inc. and Nantucket Looms, who put on the show. Packing and loading the truck and trailer are not much fun and most all of the hard, hot work is done by Dan. He does a great job!

Its hard to photograph chairs and benches, but hopefully you can get and idea of the finished work. The red chair is one of a set of 4. The bench is an antique one with "pillow" back. You can see the beginning of the painting process at our May 22nd entry on the blog. Grain painting, stencil design and freehand shell painting make this very rich in texture and color. It looks so much better than my photo. Hopefully some will get to see it at a show!

Dan has finished the jelly cupboard! 40 3/4 x 18 3/8 x 46 1/2 H, It is really dynamic.

I have painted this wonderful dovetailed old box over Dan's tiger grain painting. This is inspired by my classes with Betsy Krieg Salm in the school girl art tradition. The front has a Baltimore Oriole and the sides have gold finches. Pen and ink borders with color added .

Last a picture of the Mermaid clock. This is a clock made by Leonard Marschark, with battery movement and pendulum. It was a pleasure to paint this wall clock.

Our next show is the Nantucket Folk Art and Artisan show, July 15h-July17th. This is our 6th year! This is always a fun show for us to do. Antique Bench

Dan is starting the process of decorating an antique bench. He is painting sections to be grain painted with a putty color base coat over a black primer coat.

Dan is almost finished with this old milk / pie safe. It orginally had screen in the panels for ventilation. Dan chose to add solid panels to give more surface for decoration. He has used black stencil decoration over a distressed red paint. It is only awaiting the "turn" knobs for closure to complete this piece.

At last, I have finished my sideboard. What a project. The graining on the red and striped trim really enriches the surface and gives depth to the paintings. I am happy with the outcome and now am hopeful that this piece will find just the right "home"

I've been working on the side of my sideboard. Designed a mariners compass . I painted a square area and glazed it to create the parchment effect to use as a background. I cut a stencil from my drawing to lay the compass design in the square. Then I added a dimensional border and a red second border with the lignt diagonal striping. I don't know if I will add a thin strip in ochre or just grain the red edge. Have to think about that.

A slow progression

Its been a very slow progression with the development of this piece. I don't know why. Sometimes everything falls into place and its simply a matter of the painting time to make everything be complete. This piece I wanted to be a more subtle classic kind of paint decoration. it is coming together piece by piece. I have finished the bottom drawer with the center section whale painting. I like the black , white and neutral tone. Everything will be richer and have more depth after the graining , glazing step. The painting has to work before that step. I have started the back painting. It will be interesting how that will work out. I also have to work on the drawers above the swag drawer. I started to put some words on the drawers, but didn't like that , so removed them. I think that I will continue to work on the scene on the back next. Also have an idea for sides and will work up some sketches for the sides.

Back to work on the sideboard. Hated the rope designs started on the three small rounded drawers above the swag, so I painted them out. I painted the front of the top braces with an off white diagonal stripe edged in yellow ochre. That border flows out and around the top and is picked up and runs down the front sides. I woke up this morning with an idea to segment the bottom long drawer into smaller blocks of color. The piece is so long horizontally and needs to have all those horizontals broken up to make the shapes more interesting. I think that I will work up anchor designs, shells, maybe a whale? I have painted the sections with a linen color and then ragged or glazed these areas with a combination of umber and yellow ochre to make a “parchment” effect as a base for the designs that will go there. Looking at the piece with the bottom sections painted, I think that the top three drawers would also work with the “parchment” treatment. I don’t know what will be painted there yet, but think that this color is pulling the piece together. I am still procrastinating on the top, but think that I will be happy if I get the bottom finished and grained. Haven’t thought too much only in a basic way about the sides.

It has been so pretty this week. Dan has been working outside, mowing and putting on a new railing about our deck. As always, there is more to do than time allows.

Dan has started some new stenciled mirrors in red and black. They are looking good. We are also deciding on what pieces will be painted next.

A friend called today and reminded me that I have not been a very good blogger. He is right. I have been neglected to post anything for quite a while. I have been shifting gears and working on some painted mirrors and finishing a painted antique stand that will be offered for sale in the TFA site “Home Grown in the Gallery”, “Flower Power “on line show. http://www.traditionalfolkart.com/folkartshows/homegrown/.

I have been working on the sideboard, but haven’t made a great deal of progress. This is sometimes how a piece progresses. I actually like to work a while on a piece then take a break and step back to get some prospective on what I have done and where I am going.
I am procrastinating on the back painting area. I am planning on painting sailing ships and a shore line in that area but know that it is going to be a little challenging for me. I am more comfortable with figures, flowers animals, and organic things rather
than structural type of images.

Dan has been busy making mirror frames for us to paint. Working on orders and some work in the yard and house have also been taking up his time.

It has been glorious here weather wise until today. Record breaking temperatures for Northern Indiana has made everything “pop”. Today is gloomy and rainy, but I am sure that the flowers and trees love the rain.

I am starting work on designs for a large side board that Dan has primed for me to paint.

I am not sure what I am going to do with it. It has a lot of area to paint. I am sketching some ideas for a nautical theme, but also considering “circus”. The piece will lend it self to either direction

Thoughts on what we do:

Recently a friend was trying to figure out what to include in a resume` besides the usual “where he had exhibited work” information. This got me thinking of what I would want to include about what and why Dan and I do the kind of work that we do. Why did we gravitate to painting “old” furniture vs. new? While we do work on both old and new, we really prefer the “old” pieces.

When we were first starting out, as a young newly married couple, visiting the antique shops was not just interesting and fun past-time, but we could pick up some pieces, mostly Victorian, at the time for a reasonable price. It was an economical way to furnish our house with interesting furniture. Repairing, refinishing, or painting our purchase was a pragmatic thing for us to do. Our first apartments and houses were not just like everyone else’s. The history of the piece was interesting to us. The pieces also lent a warm, inviting atmosphere to our living spaces. Visually interesting objects were important things for us to have in our lives. I think that there has also been a component of “saving” things, reinventing them and giving them a new life.

That emphasis of reviving pieces has been a continual theme in our professional and personal lives. Painting on existing furniture does have some guidelines for us though.
Some pieces have what we refer to as good “bones”. Not every used piece of furniture should be decorated. Bad structure and bad proportions can’t be made “good” with a coat of paint. We tend to like simple lines, good construction and proportion. Sometimes repairs and replaced parts are necessary.

We are going to post from time to time some news of what we are working on.A little bit about how our pieces progress from old pieces that need some rejuvenation to the very rich and and striking pieces that they become.

This format is new to me so I will probably make some mistakes along the way.
